Oscar predictions – Fantasia Barrino in The Color Purple – is the early favorite. “The Color Purple” originated from Alice Walker’s novel and has undergone various adaptations. Steven Spielberg directed a film version in 1985, receiving 11 Oscar nominations but winning none. Notably, Whoopi Goldberg was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Celie, a Black woman in the early 20th century Southern U.S. If Goldberg were to win, she would become the second Black woman to win the Best Actress award, following Halle Berry’s win for “Monster’s Ball.”

Fantasia Barrino-Taylor, the winner of Season 3 of a singing competition, revealed in February her intention to pause her career for education. Recently, she excitedly announced on Instagram her enrollment at Central State, a historically Black college in Ohio. The 38-year-old singer, also known as Fantasia, is enrolled at the historically Black college in Wilberforce, Ohio and will be taking online classes at the college.

On July 18, 2015, she married Kendall Taylor.

Emerging into the national spotlight through “Idol,” she portrays herself as a youthful, innocent, and eager-to-please Southern girl. In spite of her promising start, a sequence of ill-advised decisions, both in her professional and personal life, took a detrimental toll. The pinnacle of these challenges arrived during her then-boyfriend’s 2010 divorce trial, which involved allegations of contributing to a marriage’s dissolution, pregnancy, and explicit videos. The heightened public scrutiny culminated in a dark moment on August 9, 2010, when she attempted self-harm by ingesting aspirin. Looking back, she recalls this period as one marked by profound emotional turmoil.
