Oprah Winfrey will step down from the board of WeightWatchers after almost a decade, following her recent disclosure of using a weight-loss medication.
She informed the company of her decision not to seek re-election at the upcoming annual shareholders’ meeting in May 2024.
Oprah, who acquired a 10% stake in WeightWatchers in 2015, expressed her intention to continue advocating for recognizing obesity as a chronic condition and reducing stigma.
In December 2023, Oprah revealed to People magazine her decision to start taking a weight-loss drug, emphasizing the need for multiple approaches to weight management.
Her agreement with WeightWatchers prohibits engagement in other weight management businesses during her tenure and for a year afterward.
The announcement of Oprah’s departure caused WW International’s shares to drop more than 20% on Friday. Oprah plans to donate her interest in WeightWatchers to the National Museum of African American History and Culture to avoid any perceived conflict of interest.
Despite stepping down from the board, Oprah will remain involved in promoting discussions on weight health through public forums and events. WW International expressed gratitude for Oprah’s contributions and noted her continued role as a collaborator and thought partner.
