As much as we would like to see the killer actor behind bars, it isn’t going to happen.

It is an election year thing for the local prosecutor.

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has been indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge stemming from the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a movie set in New Mexico. Special prosecutors brought the case to a grand jury after receiving a new gun analysis. Baldwin’s defense attorneys plan to contest the charge.

During a rehearsal, Baldwin, who also co-produced the film “Rust,” pointed a gun at Hutchins, resulting in her death and the injury of director Joel Souza. Baldwin claimed he had only pulled back the gun’s hammer, not the trigger.

The indictment presents two grounds for the involuntary manslaughter charge: negligent firearm use and felony misconduct with indifference to others’ safety.

Civil lawsuits seeking compensation from Baldwin and the film’s producers were temporarily halted as prosecutors pursued the criminal case. These lawsuits involve members of the film crew as plaintiffs.

Gloria Allred, representing Hutchins’ family in a civil case, emphasized the pursuit of truth. Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, stressed the need for prosecutors to establish Baldwin’s broader responsibility in gun handling.

Previously, prosecutors had dropped an involuntary manslaughter charge, citing possible gun modification and malfunction. However, a new analysis conducted by ballistics and forensic experts using replacement parts indicated that the trigger had to be pulled or depressed to release the hammer.

The film’s weapons supervisor, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering, set for trial in February. Assistant director David Halls pleaded no contest to unsafe firearm handling and cooperated in the investigation.

Despite legal challenges, “Rust” resumed filming in Montana, with Halyna Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, becoming an executive producer under an agreement.
