Odyssey Study Group

Adam Driver

Mother in law: Cynthia May
During the early 2000s, Cynthia May, Adam Driver’s mother-in-law, who is now 67 years old, served as a teacher at the controversial NYC cult known as the Odyssey Study Group. The group is currently facing serious accusations, including allegations of emotional abuse, pressuring members into committing infidelity, engaging in child abuse, and enforcing forced labor practices.

Her ex-husband: Spencer Schneider

The Odyssey Study Group, based in Manhattan, has filed a lawsuit against one of its former members for publishing a highly revealing book. The memoir, released in July 2022 by ex-member Spencer Schneider, draws explosive comparisons between the group’s founder, Gans Horn, and the infamous cult leader Jim Jones, known for orchestrating a mass murder-suicide of over 900 followers in Jonestown in 1978.

In 1997, a photograph taken at a Christmas party hosted by the Odyssey Study Group prominently featured Sharon Gans Horn at the forefront, shedding light on the organization’s affluent and privileged background.

In the book, Schneider accuses Gans Horn of swindling inheritances from members and subjecting them to systematic terror. He goes as far as to claim that Horn was “every bit as demented” as Jones. Since leaving the Odyssey Study Group in 2012, Schneider has persistently criticized and haunted the organization. He has labeled it a “sinister cult,” alleging manipulation, abuse, and exploitation of its members.

As a response to these accusations, the Odyssey Study Group is taking legal action against Schneider in Manhattan Supreme Court, claiming that he has disseminated false and damaging information about the group. The lawsuit aims to challenge the credibility of Schneider’s memoir and defend the reputation of the organization.
