What happened:

In April 2023, the Dalai Lama issued an apology following an outcry caused by a video showing him kissing a child on the lips and asking the child to “suck my tongue” during an event in northern India.

The spiritual leader’s office released a statement on Monday, expressing his regret for any hurt his words may have caused the boy and his family, as well as his global friends. The statement explained that the Dalai Lama often playfully teases people he meets, even in public and in front of cameras, with innocent intentions.

The video of the incident, which occurred in February during an event in Dharamshala, went viral on social media, leading to criticism from numerous users regarding the Dalai Lama’s actions. In the video, the young boy approaches the Nobel Peace Prize winner, asking for a hug, to which the Dalai Lama responds with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. However, he then proceeds to kiss the child on the lips and makes the controversial remark, asking the boy to “suck my tongue” while playfully poking his tongue out.

The Dalai Lama’s apology came in response to the widespread concern and discussion sparked by the video, acknowledging the need for sensitivity in his interactions, especially with children.
