With Hollywood power agency WME behind her, Meghan is about to become the ultimate modern celebrity

Earlier today, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced a major move in her post-royal career. She’s signed to the Hollywood “power agency” WME and is to be represented by Ari Emanuel, who’s said to have inspired Entourage’s ferocious uber-agent Ari Gold. According to Variety, WME beat out strong competition vying to represent Meghan.

If you think this marks a return to the screen for the former Suits star, however, you underestimate the scale of Meghan’s ambition. In fact, acting is firmly off the table. Instead, WME will be repping the duchess as she pursues brand partnerships, “business building” and more behind-the-scenes film and television production, taking on Meghan and Harry’s production company, Archewell, in the same deal.

This move feels like a key way marker for Meghan’s path forward. That’s because of the brand partnerships aspect, guided by “brand architect” Brad Slater, who has done similar image and business building for The Rock and Meghan’s close friend Serena Williams. Oprah Winfrey is also a WME client.

Translated from corporate Hollywood-ese? Meghan’s planting her flag as an A-list influencer and a truly modern sort of celebrity, the tippy-top of the famous food chain and far more likely give a speech to an auditorium of thought leaders than sign autographs outside a stage door.
