Iman Abdulmajid, commonly known as Iman, was born on July 25, 1955, in Mogadishu, Somalia. Raised in a Muslim household, she spent her youth in various countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, due to political instability in Somalia. This diverse upbringing deeply influenced her worldview and later became a significant part of her identity as a supermodel.

Iman was discovered by chance while she was studying political science at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Photographer Peter Beard spotted her walking down the street and approached her, asking if she had ever been photographed before. Initially, Iman thought he was trying to flirt with her and brushed him off. However, Beard persisted and eventually convinced her to pose for a photo shoot.

Iman rose to prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the first black supermodels to achieve international acclaim. Her breakthrough came at a time when the fashion industry was predominantly white, and she shattered barriers by gracing the covers of top fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

Throughout her career, Iman has been actively involved in various charitable endeavors. She has supported numerous causes, including education, healthcare, and humanitarian efforts in her native Somalia. As a goodwill ambassador for organizations like the Children’s Defense Fund, Iman has used her platform to advocate for social justice and empowerment.
