Benicio Del Toro honored with NYC proclamation for pandemic effort

The Hollywood star honored as a hometown hero, actor Benicio Del Toro was awarded a city proclamation on Thursday.

Naming June 24, 2021 “Benicio Del Toro Day,” Mayor Bill de Blasio sang the actor’s praises at a celebration in East Harlem.

The Academy-Award winning star of “Traffic” and “Che” was recognized for participating in a campaign to debunk myths about COVID vaccines.

Speaking at the marketplace La Marqueta at 112th St. and Park Ave., Del Toro described losing an uncle to COVID and following the course of the pandemic through his brother, a doctor at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn.

“He expressed his concern of how low the vaccination rates were among our Latinx communities,” Del Toro said of his sibling. “And we decided to do something.”

During the rocky rollout of the vaccination effort, Black and Hispanic New Yorkers got jabbed at far lower rates than other groups. The disparities got smaller over the following months, though they still persist.

“By spreading the truth about the vaccine, by helping people to understand what works with the vaccine, we are saving lives,” de Blasio said. “[Del Toro] has helped to save lives.” – Source
