The Voice Australia: Judge Boy George on how his flamboyance finally paid off

Boy George might be described as the phoenix of the entertainment industry. Or maybe the chameleon would be more appropriate.

George Alan O’Dowd is a survivor of the notoriously fickle entertainment industry that spits out it stars after chewing before swallowing.

The 55-year-old grew up in Eltham in south east London, George’s career counsellor scoffed when he suggested a career in the creative industries.

“When I talked to my careers officer about being a musician they just laughed at me, they were like ‘Mr O’Dowd, maybe think about working in a factory’,” he recalls.

“If I talked about wanting to work in fashion or music or whatever they just laughed.”

He did take their advice and for five long weeks he worked in an apple packing factory. It wasn’t meant to be.

“I was always late,” he says. “I am pretty much unemployable.” – Source
