The people behind this A-/B+ list actress who stars in a hit pay cable show, and has the same name as an electronic assistant, are trying to do a Robert Pattinson/The Batman thing with the Madonna casting.

Everyone knows that trick now though, so it just looks lame and overplayed.

Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and Julia Garner Are All Battling It Out to Play Madonna

When Madonna first announced that she would be helming a big-screen adaptation of her life story, the news prompted countless questions. What period of her illustrious, four-decade-long career would the film focus on? Would it feature new music? And, most importantly, who could possibly play the pioneering Queen of Pop navigating her formative years? Now, we may be close to having an answer.

On March 2, The Hollywood Reporter noted that the list of contenders has finally been whittled down to five names by casting director Carmen Cuba. One is Florence Pugh, the luminous British actor who earned an Oscar nomination for her scene-stealing turn in Little Women, has proven her versatility in everything from Lady Macbeth and Midsommar to Black Widow, and is poised to take 2022 by storm with Don’t Worry Darling and The Wonder. Next is Julia Garner, the Ozark star who earned rave reviews with The Assistant and recently gave a barnstorming performance as the beguiling titular scammer in Inventing Anna. There’s also Euphoria’s irrepressible Alexa Demie, who is coming off of a record-breaking second season; Australian indie darling Odessa Young, who’s charmed critics in Assassination Nation, Shirley, and Mothering Sunday; and newcomer Emma Laird, best known for playing a resourceful escort in the crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown.

This comes after a months-long search during which a host of established actors, fresh faces, and musicians were reportedly considered (The Hollywood Reporter adds that Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira were once in the mix), and the auditions that some advanced to have been described as “grueling” by sources with knowledge of the project. They claim that these have involved singing, acting, and intense, sometimes 11-hours-long sessions with Madonna and her choreographer. – Source
