I have also said over the past couple years that he wouldn't land it because the producers want to keep everything the way they have for the past five or so decades. They did offer him a role as a villain.

He fought a mobster on the set of a movie while cameras were rolling. The mobster pulled a gun on the actor because the actor was having se.x with the mobster’s actress girlfriend. The actress has one of the greatest discovery stories ever and was an Academy Award winner/nominee. Oh, and the daughter of the actress ended up killing the mobster.
