William Shatner Recalls ‘Agony’ After Losing Wife to Addiction and How Leonard Nimoy Helped Him Move On

William Shatner is revisiting one of the most painful experiences of his life – his wife Nerine’s addiction struggles, which contributed to her death in 1999.

The actor came home one night in 1999 and found his wife naked and unconscious at the bottom of their pool, with authorities saying alcohol contributed to the accidental drowning. Shatner and Nerine, a former model, were wed two years before her death. It was Shatner’s third marriage.

On SiriusXM’s Tell Me Everything, the Star Trek star told host John Fugelsang that no one can understand the agony an addict goes through.

“I don’t understand the agony. I am empathetic to the agony. I am in agony myself, not about drinking … but whatever my agonies are,” Shatner said.

He said that his Star Trek costar Leonard Nimoy, who struggled with addiction during his life, helped Shatner try to pick up the pieces after his wife’s death. – Source
