A Complete Timeline of All the Wild Lethal Weapon Drama

It’s been a whirlwind year for both the cast of Lethal Weapon and its fans, what with the reported feuding of stars Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans and then the subsequent firing and quitting, respectively, of both actors. Even experts here at TV Guide have been having a hard time sorting out what happened when. But instead of endlessly scrolling through reports of this controversy and that, we’ve decided to make life easy for you. Here is a complete timeline of all the on-set drama that’s made headlines the past six months.

April 23, 2018: Reports surface that Warner Bros. is considering recasting the character of Martin Riggs due to Crawford’s bad behavior on set, including verbal abuse and creating a hostile work environment. Speculation begins about the fate of Lethal Weapon without Crawford.

April 24, 2018: Crawford posts a public apology on his Instagram, explaining his outbursts and citing “anger over working conditions that did not feel safe or conducive to good work” as his reasoning.

May 8, 2018: Crawford is officially fired from Lethal Weapon, and the recasting process beings. Crawford tweets, “Wait, wait, wait……you can’t fire me on my day off!”

May 13, 2018: Fox renews Lethal Weapon for Season 3 and announces that Seann William Scott will join the cast as Riggs’ replacement. Crawford confirms he is leaving the show on Instagram, saying, “Riggs was a dream role and the experience will live with me forever. My heart is full. Good Luck nxt [sic] season!!”

May 14, 2018: Wayans shares video and photo evidence of his on-set injury, which apparently occurred after a piece of shrapnel hit him in the head during a stunt explosion. He writes “directed by @claynecrawford” in each tweet. Wayans also claims that Crawford hit an actor in the mouth with a bottle of green tea and busted his mouth open. (Wayans has since deleted his Twitter account.)

June 1, 2018: Variety posts behind-the-scenes audio of Crawford where he can be heard screaming about noise on set and calling Wayans “the biggest crybaby p–y I’ve ever met in my life.” Variety also releases information detailing Wayans’ “diva-like” behavior behind the scenes, including documents that showed Wayans demanded food every two-and-half hours, and a nap after lunch.

Aug. 28, 2018: Crawford tells his version of events as a guest on the Drinkin’Bros podcast. He details “unprofessional” behavior from Wayans, including his refusal to shoot inside a church because of religious reasons, and taking sick days to purposefully derail Crawford’s directorial debut. He also claims Wayans never wanted to be on the show and that he was blackmailed with the tapes eventually released by Variety any time he tried to raise issues about Wayans’ behavior.

Sept. 25, 2018: The third season of Lethal Weapon premieres. Riggs is killed off and replaced as Murtaugh’s partner by detective William Cole (Seann William Scott). Fans are not happy.

Oct. 3, 2018: Wayans reveals to Electronic Urban Report that he plans to exit Lethal Weapon. “I’m going to be quitting the show in December, after we finish the initial 13 [episodes],” Wayans said. “I really don’t know what they’re planning, but that’s what I’m planning. I’m a 58-year-old diabetic, and I’m working 16 hour days… Like Murtaugh said, ‘I’m too old for this [s—].'”- Source
