George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney have been granted French citizenship along with their twin children after living in France and making the country their main home.
The French government said the family was granted citizenship because their work and public influence help raise France’s global profile. Some French officials questioned whether it was fair to grant citizenship to high-profile foreigners, but the government defended the decision under laws that allow naturalization for people who contribute to the nation’s international influence.
The Clooneys said they appreciate French life and privacy, and they want their children to grow up with less media pressure than in Hollywood. George Clooney is still learning French, while Amal and the twins already speak it well.
