A new lawsuit is putting the family of Cyndi Lauper under a very uncomfortable spotlight, and this time it has nothing to do with music.
The legal filing centers on an incident that allegedly took place in 2020 at a New York apartment connected to Lauper’s household. The case does not name the singer herself as a defendant, but it does target her husband, David Thornton.
According to the complaint, a woman claims her daughter was invited to the apartment, where she says the couple’s son, Declyn ‘Dex’ Lauper, allegedly assaulted her.
But the legal strategy here is what’s raising eyebrows. Instead of suing the son directly, the lawsuit goes after Thornton, arguing he allegedly allowed access to the apartment and failed to take steps that could have prevented the situation. The filing also claims he may have been aware of prior concerning behavior, though none of those claims have been proven in court.
The mother is seeking damages, pointing to emotional distress and long-term impact tied to what she says happened to her daughter.
So far, there has been no public response from the family.
This situation also lands against the backdrop of previous legal issues involving Dex, which is only intensifying the attention around the case.
His gun possession case (2024 – resolved 2026)
Dex was arrested in connection with a 2024 incident in New York involving a loaded firearm. He was not accused of firing the weapon, but he was found in possession of it after a shooting incident involving another person. He later pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon. He avoided jail and received:
- 1 year probation
- requirement to stay arrest-free
- substance-related conditions attached to the deal
At this stage, everything remains an allegation being argued in civil court, and no conclusions have been reached. Still, with a well-known name attached and a serious claim at the center, this is the kind of story that is not going away quietly.
The case also comes amid past legal trouble involving the son, including a resolved gun possession case that resulted in probation, along with earlier civil allegations that remain disputed.
