This alliterate supporting actor won one Oscar and was nominated for another.

He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

He also created a national white supremacist organization and was one of the creators of the communist blacklist.

Charles Coburn

The Dark Side Of Academy Award Winner Charles Coburn. White Supremacist, Co-Creator of the Communist Blacklist and Sexual Predator

Tonight, TCM featured “Monkey Business” (1952) that starred Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers and Marilyn Monroe. Also featured was Charles Coburn, who was one of the most memorable actors in the 1940s and 1950s as the sometimes curmudgeonly older gentleman in many comedic film. He also displayed great dramatic skills notably as the masochistic surgeon in “King’s Row.”

What is rather disturbing was that he was the Vice-President of the group that helped create the actor’s communist blacklist. Coburn was also a member of the White Citizens’ Councils, a white supremacist group which opposed racial integration. And to top it off, he was accused of sexual harassment.

While researching a book about Robert Cummings, we were shocked to read about Coburn’s background.

Coburn was a co-star with Cummings in great films such as The Devil and Miss Jones (with Jean Arthur) and King’s Row (with Ronald Reagan).

In the archives at the Motion Picture Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library are stories about this Academy award winning actor that would seem far worse than the disgraced performers of 2018 such as Roseanne or Kevin Spacey.

In the 1940s, Coburn served as vice-president of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, a group opposed to leftist infiltration and proselytization in Hollywood during the Cold War.

The initial, immediate purpose in forming the organization was to assemble a group of well-known show business figures willing to attest, under oath, before Congress to the supposed presence of Communists in their industry. When the House Un-American Activities Committee investigated the motion picture industry, the vast majority of “friendly witnesses” were supplied by the Alliance. Coburn helped create the blacklist along with fellow members such as Ward Bond, Walter Brennan, Roy Brewer, Clarence Brown, Charles Coburn, Adolph Menjou, John Ford, Ronald Reagan and others.

What really disturbed me was that Coburn helped create The Citizens’ Councils (also referred to as White Citizens’ Councils). who were an associated network of white supremacist organizations in the United States, concentrated in the South.

The first was formed on July 11, 1954. After 1956, it was known as the Citizens’ Councils of America. With about 60,000 members across the United States, mostly in the South, the groups were founded primarily to oppose racial integration of schools, but they also opposed voter registration efforts and integration of public facilities during the 1950s and 1960s. Members used severe intimidation tactics including economic boycotts, firing people from jobs, propaganda, and violence against citizens and civil-rights activists.

He was also accused of sexual harassment. According to Piper Laurie in her memoirs (Learning To Love Out Loud), Charles Coburn loved pinching women’s bottoms. It was for him like a tic. Every female under one hundred and five had to move fast around. But no one ever considered reporting from sexual harassment. – Source
