Free Edition: Shonda v. Ryan: Who’s Winning at Netflix?

It was $300 million dollars for Ryan Murphy, of American Horror Story and Glee fame! And $100 million for the Shonda Rhimes of Grey’s Anatomy and Shondaland fame! Who cares that, as a company, Netflix would end up losing $3 billion that year in 2018; they sure could spend!

Old Hollywood was doomed. Dead! They couldn’t compete with this type of financial firepower.

Four years later — wait, four years!? —we now can check back in on these two mega-deals. In the intervening time, the streaming ratings era began and we know more now about what works (and doesn’t) than ever before. So let’s ask — and answer — a simple question: who won this showdown? And what does it mean going forward?

Rhimes has produced two shows for Netflix: one she executive produced (Bridgerton) and one she show-ran (Inventing Anna). Both were big, big hits. (We don’t have Nielsen data for Bridgerton season two, which debuted on March 25 yet. But according to Netflix’s global data, it’s their biggest hit through three days.)

In slight fairness, some of Ryan Murphy’s shows debuted before Netflix expanded their streaming ratings to 30 data points per week. And this is a U.S.-only look, not global viewership.

In other words, not only did Rhimes generate a ton more viewership than Murphy, up until she renegotiated her deal last summer, she did it at one-third the cost! That’s a great deal for Netflix. – Source

Ryan Murphy Moves to Netflix in Blockbuster 5-Year, $300 Million Deal – 2018

Ryan Murphy is Netflix’s first ever $300 million man.

The streamer has poached the prolific producer from his longtime 21st Century Fox perch via a blockbuster (and unprecedented) five-year deal valued at, yep, $300 million, per The New York Times. The pact, which takes effect in July, calls for Murphy to produce new series and films exclusively at Netflix.

The news comes two months after the Walt Disney Company announced that it was acquiring a majority of 21st Century Fox — a quasi-merger that Murphy recently admitted made him nervous. (At the Television Critics Association winter press tour last month, he recalled nervously asking Disney’s boss Robert A. Iger, “Am I going to have to put Mickey Mouse in American Horror Story?”)

“This history of this moment is not lost on me,” Mr. Murphy said in a statement. “I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me.” – Source
