Inuit singer Kelly Fraser committed suicide after PTSD battle, family says

Inuk singer Kelly Fraser committed suicide on Christmas Eve after a lengthy battle with post-traumatic stress disorder, her family has revealed.

Fraser, who gained attention for her Inuit-language cover of Rihanna’s Diamonds, was just 26 when she took her own life. But her nearest and dearest are now hoping her life, and death, will help remind others going through similar struggles to “take care of themselves.”

“(She) gave so much of herself to help others. She was fiercely open with her fans in the hopes that sharing her struggles might help them know they were not alone. Kelly fought so hard to be well. We know that she would want us all to continue to do our very best to take care of ourselves. Please respect our privacy at this time as no further details about the circumstances of her death will be provided.”

Fraser, who grew up in Sanikiluaq, released her debut album, Isuma, in 2014, while her acclaimed 2017 release, Sedna, was nominated for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at Canada’s Juno Music Awards. She was working on a third album at the time of her death. – Source
