Some Call Normani The Next Beyoncé—With 3 Billion Streams, This 30 Under 30 Breakout Is On Her Way

A few weeks before its annual Video Music Awards show in August, MTV phoned Normani, the 23-year-old superstar in the making, with an offer to unveil a new song in front of a national television audience. She jumped at the opportunity, even though there was a major problem: She’d finished recording the single, “Motivation,” but had no music video, let alone a dance routine to perform.

What followed was a frenzied stretch of rehearsals capped by two shooting days and dozens of takes to get the video done, all balanced around Normani’s engagement as an opener for Ariana Grande’s tour. She finished in time, putting together a stylized ’90s throwback complete with pastels and crop-tops that, along with her undulating moves, stirred memories of a younger Beyoncé. Still, the big evening itself at the Newark Prudential Center didn’t go off perfectly.

“I actually couldn’t hear anything,” she recalls two months later. “The music was glitching mid-performance. So I just had to pull it together.”

The technical difficulties went unnoticed by the crowd of nearly 15,000, and her routine brought the audience—including VIPs like Lizzo, Halsey and Taylor Swift—to their feet. “I want to do it again,” she says with a grin. “It went by so fast.”

If Normani stays on course, she will likely get more than a few encores. Her songs have been streamed 3 billion times in the two years since the dissolution of her first group, Fifth Harmony, which amounts to more spins than superstars like Adele and Jay-Z over that span. All of that adds to the growing chorus of comparisons to Beyoncé, the reigning queen of pop, who began her career as a member of the ’90s R&B group Destiny’s Child. – Source
