This upcoming documentary about that legendary A++ singer and actress who everyone knows and the husband/manager/producer she was married to the longest will gloss over the husband’s mob ties.

One of his best friends and a mentor was an infamous mobster who supplied starlets to movie studio execs and politicians… which is how the husband-manager met his first wife, a B/C-list actress.

‘Sid & Judy’ explores more of the Judy Garland story

Is there anything left unsaid about Judy Garland?

It’s been 50 years since the adolescent star of “The Wizard of Oz” and grown-up queen of stage, screen and recordings died at age 47, but she continues to be rediscovered each generation by new fans tripping down the yellow brick road. And this year looks like a banner period for people to discover Garland, or see her in a different light.

September will see the release of “Judy,” the biopic starring Renee Zellweger in a transformative role playing Garland during the final year of her life. And we also have the arrival of a new documentary, “Sid & Judy,” which takes a look at the idol through the lens of her third husband, Sid Luft. The doc will be screening at the Frameline festival Wednesday, June 26, and shines new light on one of the most challenging and creatively fruitful eras of Garland’s career.

“The project kicked off because of our access to the Luft estate and Sid’s memoir,” says the documentary’s director, Stephen Kijak. “The film is called ‘Sid & Judy’; there’s two characters very much alive in this film. The challenge is to not give it over too much to either one.”

Garland may not have actually been born in a trunk, as the song she famously sang in “A Star Is Born” claims, but she was propelled into show business early. Born Frances Gumm, Garland began performing in vaudeville at age 3 as part of the family act, the Gumm Sisters. When the family moved from Minnesota to Hollywood, Gumm was renamed Judy Garland and signed under contract to film studio MGM. – Source
