Facing potentially decades in prison, R. Kelly ‘hopeful’ despite jail beating, COVID-19 lockdown

Embattled singer R. Kelly is to go to trial on federal racketeering charges in New York in just four months, but already he’s feeling the squeeze.

Facing the potential of decades in prison, Kelly is back on lockdown at Chicago’s federal jail because of a new COVID-19 outbreak. His repeated attempts to win release on bond pending trial have been denied. And he still suffers headaches and pain from a recent beating at the hands of a fellow inmate, his lawyers say.

“Mentally, he’s probably in as bad of shape as I’ve seen him,” Kelly’s lead attorney, Steven Greenberg said last week. “His mood at this point is certainly still hopeful about his case, but I think on some level he’s just very beaten down physically and mentally.”

Tuesday will mark Kelly’s 500th day in federal custody — a clock that started ticking when he was arrested by federal authorities on July 11, 2019, while walking his dog outside his home in the Trump Tower in downtown Chicago.

The indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn alleged Kelly and his associates ran a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for illegal sexual contact, then isolated and threatened them to keep them under control and prevent them from going to authorities.

A separate indictment brought by federal prosecutors in Chicago alleged the singer conspired with two former employees to rig his 2008 child pornography trial in Cook County by paying off witnesses and victims to change their stories.

Kelly, 53, could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted in the New York case alone. The Chicago federal charges carry the potential of decades more in prison, and Kelly is also facing criminal sexual abuse charges filed in Cook County in February 2019. – Source

Indicted former R. Kelly manager in the middle of plea negotiations, prosecutors say

(CNN)A former manager for singer R. Kelly, who faces criminal charges of his own, is in the middle of plea negotiations, prosecutors revealed at a status conference Friday.
Donnell Russell was indicted in October on one count of interstate stalking for allegedly contacting an anonymous “Jane Doe” victim in Kelly’s case “with the intent to harass and intimidate” her and her family, according to the indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge in October, court documents show. Russell was also charged by criminal complaint in the Southern District of New York with threatening physical harm by interstate communication and conspiracy to threaten physical harm after Russell allegedly placed a phone call to a Manhattan theater to prevent the December 4, 2018 screening of “Surviving R. Kelly,” according to a criminal complaint. He allegedly told the theater there was an armed person inside, prepared to begin shooting, prosecutors said. His attorney in that case, Annalisa Miron, said Russell pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Russell, of Chicago, was a manager for R. Kelly, who is currently being held in a Chicago federal prison pending trials. Kelly is facing charges in New York including racketeering and violations of the Mann Act, which prohibits trafficking for prostitution or sexual activity. The charges Kelly faces stem from activity that prosecutors say took place over two decades in New York, Connecticut, Illinois and California. Kelly was also indicted on federal charges in Illinois for child pornography and obstruction, as well as state charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. – Source

R. Kelly Paid Bribe So He Could Marry 15-Year-Old Aaliyah, Government Alleges

When people talk about a quarter century of allegations against R&B singer R. Kelly, they usually point to one starting point: his relationship with his teenage protégée, the late singer Aaliyah. He mentored the burgeoning artist and produced her debut album, the coyly titled Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number. He was 27 years old; she was just 15.

And then, on Aug. 31, 1994, Kelly married Aaliyah Haughton — with an official Illinois wedding certificate that stated that she was 18.

Now, 25 years later, federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York have filed a new charge against Kelly: that on the day before his wedding to Aaliyah, Kelly and others in his circle bribed a public official in Illinois to create a fake ID for “Jane Doe #1.”

The new charge is an addition to a sweeping set of federal indictments filed against Kelly in July by prosecutors in New York and Illinois. Prosecutors have accused the singer of abusing women and girls for more than two decades, including kidnapping, forced labor and sending child pornography across state lines.

Kelly continues to deny all allegations, which now include 19 federal charges and numerous separate sexual assault charges in Illinois, as well as multiple ongoing civil lawsuits.

The allegation of a forged identity document made for Aaliyah is not new in itself. In journalist Jim DeRogatis’ recently published Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly, the singer’s former tour manager and personal assistant, Demetrius Smith, said that he obtained a fake ID on Aaliyah’s behalf. Smith repeated that assertion during an on-screen interview in the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, which aired in January. But Thursday’s indictment is the first time that Kelly has faced criminal charges in relation to his marriage to Aaliyah.

Within months, the marriage was annulled, but it remained a subject of intense speculation directed at both Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001 at age 22, and Kelly, who has described their relationship as “deep friends,” but has carefully avoided further comment. (For much of the 1990s, Kelly was managed by a man named Barry Hankerson, who was also Aaliyah’s uncle.)

In 2016, Kelly told GQ, “Well, because of Aaliyah’s passing, as I’ve always said, out of respect for her mother who’s sick and her father who’s passed, I will never have that conversation with anyone. Out of respect for Aaliyah, and her mother and father who has asked me not to personally. But I can tell you,” he added, “I loved her, I can tell you she loved me, we was very close.” – Source

R. Kelly Drags Aaliyah Into Another Desperate Attempt To Get Out Of Prison

R. Kelly is dragging his ex-Aaliyah into his new plea to get out of prison.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Kelly is back in court attempting to be released from prison on bond. In the past couple of months, Kelly has made numerous arguments for his release, all of which have been shut down.

In newly filed documents, the disgraced singer wanted to make sure the judge knew he wasn’t planning on intimidating any witnesses or obstructing justice if allowed out. In his criminal indictment, prosecutors have listed six victims they accuse Kelly of abusing over the years. Kelly says he is not a risk to obstruct justice because one of the victims is dead, who he doesn’t name but it is Aaliyah.

He says, “Jane Doe number one appears to be a deceased individual. The only other individual who has spoken or been identified regarding that allegation has been actively talking about his appearance before the federal grand jury on social media.” In regard to “Jane Doe number five”, he says that is his ex-girlfriend, Azriel Clary.

Kelly tries to trash Azriel saying, “She has, since leaving Mr. Kelly, created an active, for-profit, social media presence, requesting individuals to subscribe to her Instagram and YouTube channels, where she regularly speaks of how awful he was.”

Kelly claims these alleged victims turned on him long ago and there is no way he could turn them if he tried. The motion reads, “To the extent this court has previously been led to believe that there may be a risk of obstruction, the fact is that there is no one related to this case who would be the slightest bit receptive to any overture from the Kelly camp.” A judge has yet to rule on Kelly’s motion.- Source
