Why Justin Bieber Should Have Surprise-Released ‘Changes’

Justin Bieber is back on top of the Billboard 200 this week with Changes, his seventh album to reach the summit. The victory makes Bieber, 25, the youngest solo artist in history to earn seven No. 1 albums, surpassing Elvis Presley. Seven chart-topping albums is an incredible feat for any musician, especially one who’s only in his mid-20s and has already been a certified hitmaker for half his life. But Changes’ successful debut comes with some qualifications.

Bieber’s latest effort debuted with 231,000 album-equivalent units, a nearly 65% decline from Purpose’s massive bow of 649,000 units back in 2015. Part of this drop can be attributed to the fact that five years is simply a long time in pop music, and the path to success has changed radically since Bieber last dominated the charts as a solo star. But Changes’ underwhelming singles and Bieber’s questionable promotional tactics likely had a negative impact on first-week sales as well. In fact, Bieber might have benefited from using the same strategy Eminem employed on his recent chart-topping album, Music to Be Murdered By, and surprise-releasing Changes. – Source
