Riverdale is set to return to TV on January 17, after a two week hiatus and a mid-season finale that left fans confused at best. And now Lili Reinhart is opening up about what’s going to be happening when the second half of the show hits TVs everywhere, and as we could imagine, there’s going to be a lot of drama, but also important discussions about things like Betty Cooper’s mental health and navigating the grey areas of certain relationships.

Lili told Glamour that as Betty’s long-lost brother joins the show, we’re going to see her struggle with some mental health issues. “When Betty digs her nails into her hands, it’s kind of when things are happening with her family. That’s her trigger, whether it be her mother, her brother, or Polly. I think that’s something to keep in mind,” she said about Betty’s self-inflicted pinching, a form of self-harm. “She’s very curious to see if he has that darkness inside him as well. There might be some sister/brother bonding over mental health issues.”

She went onto say that Betty’s friendship with Veronica is, sadly, up in the air too. Though it would seem natural to think their rift is due to the fact that Betty and Archie kissed, Lili shut down the archaic “squabble over a boy” narrative. Instead, she hinted that the fight might have more to do with familial politics. “Not to give too much away, but I think there is definitely challenges to come in Betty and Veronica’s friendship, and it’s a result of their parents, to be honest,” she said. “It’s like, how do they navigate their friendship with the parents that they have? And if their parents are at war, does that mean the kids are at war? That becomes very, very heavy in the latter half.
