Actor Rose McGowan has accused a top Hollywood executive of rape in a series of tweets posted on Thursday.

McGowan, 43, made the allegations on social media, and also said she was ‘shamed’ by others in the industry in the wake of the alleged attack.

‘A (female) criminal attorney said because I’d done a sex scene in a film I would never win against the studio head,’ she said, responding to a hashtag, #WhyWomenDontReport. ‘Because it’s been an open secret in Hollywood/Media & they shamed me while adulating my rapist #WhyWomenDontReport,’ the second tweet read.

‘Because my ex sold our movie to my rapist for distribution #WhyWomenDontReport,’ a third post said.

McGowan’s final post on the topic read:

‘It is time for some goddamned honesty in this world.’

Earlier, she had replied to a message from British film producer Cassian Elwes, tweeting:

‘When no one else in Hollywood would listen, you heard.

When no one else in Hollywood would do, you acted.’

The actor, who is best known for her role on the TV show, Charmed, stopped short of naming her alleged attacker.

However, many people close to the industry are reportedly narrowing down who it could potentially be.

Earlier this week McGowan took part in a video calling out Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

She has also gone through a dramatic transformation over the years, changing from a starlet who dazzled in daring frocks on the red carpet to a outspoken activist and feminist.

In an essay for the Hollywood Reporter published last month, the actor took aim at the red carpet scene, describing it as ‘visual rape’.

‘My experience on the red carpet has been a journey of defiance, then one-of-a-kind acquiescence and finally a refusal to play by invented rules passed down through an aged system,’ she wrote.

‘The selling of a self I do not recognize, to publicize a self that wasn’t me, stopped making sense.

Whether it is known to those inside of Hollywood, it looks very antiquated.

‘One of the last red carpets that I did, the Entertainment Tonight correspondent asked me if I, like Cate Blanchett, felt it was inappropriate for the camera to pan up and down my body.

I told her that it felt like visual rape.’

The powerful statement appeared to be a far cry from years earlier when McGowan made headlines for wearing a sheer metal dress to the 1998 VMAs, while she was dating shock-rocker Marilyn Manson.

The couple was engaged for two years, before they separated and McGowan began dating film director Robert Rodriguez in 2007.

That relationship broke down in 2009, and she then married artist Davey Detail in 2013.

The couple divorced in February this year.
